L-1011 ECS: Overview (21-1)

The Environmental Control System (ECS) consists of the following systems:

  • Pneumatic Supply System - Provides the source of cabin air supply by selecting engine bleed air from the proper compressor stage, and regulating the temperature, pressure, and flow of this air supplied to the using systems. 
  • Pack Control System - Regulates the cooling of air provided by each of the three air conditioning packs according to the demands of the 4 temperature zones in the aircraft.  
  • Zone Control System - Regulates the addition of warm trim air to the pack outputs for those 4 zones requiring warmer supply air than provided by the packs. 
  • Pressurization Control System - Controls the flow of air out of the cabin to maintain a comfortable cabin pressure, and to maintain the selected rate of pressure change during ascent and descent 

These major systems are operated and controlled from the Environment Control Panel which dominates the upper section of the flight engineer station. The engine bleed and cabin temperature control portion of being on the left side of the ECS panel, provides for the operation and control of the pneumatic bleed air supply system and the air conditioning Pack Control/Zone Control system. The pressurization control is operated, controlled and monitored from the pressurization panel in the upper right hand portion of the panel. The ECS monitor panel in the lower right hand portion was incorporated in the system for monitoring the performance of the Engine Bleed/Cabin Temperature Control System, to trouble-shoot individual systems and to aid in writing accurate squawks.
