L-1011 Trainer Installation: Glare Shield Replacement

L-1011 Trainer - Glare Shield - Autopilot

The L-1011 trainer that we got from Delta did not come with any real instrumentation. All of the instruments you have been seeing as part of the blog postings are instruments we replaced with real flight hardware used on actual L-1011s. Today, we replaced the last photo mock up on the simulator ... the glare shield autopilot and radio components. In the image below you can see the image that was pasted onto a plate and mounted in place of the autopilot under the glare shield. This has now been replaced with a custom made plate and with the actual control components:

The glare shield is not only home to the autopilot components, but also holds the VHF NAV 1 and VHF NAV 2 radio as well as the RADIO/NAV selector for the HSIs, a ENGINE 2 warning light and a FIRE warning light.

Original Flight Hardware: Nacelle/Pylon Overheat Detection Test

The Nacelle/Pylon Ovht Det Test panel is part of the Fire Warning and Suppression system on the Lockheed L-1011. The panel has a test system for each engine nacelle/pylon combination. Each system is monitored by two fire detection loops; labeled "A" and "B".

Below the dual loop light, there is a loop selector switch for each engine. Pressing the test button illuminates lights to indicate system integrity.

Original Flight Hardware: Aural Warning Test and Galley Smoke

The Aural Test and Galley Smoke Panel is a somewhat interesting combination panel. Earlier versions of the L-1011 did not have the Galley Smoke panel as part of it. There is a rotary switch that allows for the selection of a number of different aural warning tones and a test switch to actuate them. The Galley Smoke warning is illuminated when smoke or fire is detected in the galley or when the test switch is at TEST.

The rotary switch provides selection of five units for aural testing:

A/C OVSP - Generates Clacker Sound.
CAB PRESS - Sounds Intermittent horn.
UNSAFE LGD - Sounds steady horn.
UNSAFE TAKEOFF - Sounds intermittent horn.
FLAPS LRS - Activates a buzzer.

Original Flight Hardware: APU Fire Extinguisher Control

The Fire Pull T-Handles are located in the pilot's overhead panel for the engines and at the top of the second officer's upper instrument panel. The picture above shows the fire t-handle for the Lockheed L-1011 APU. There is a mechanical latch that holds the t-handle in place and which must be depressed prior to pulling the the handle.

Most fire zones on the Lockheed L-1011 have two fire bottles each. For example, the engines and the APU have two bottles each. The bottles are discharged with the momentary switch behind the t-handle. During the discharge, the respective annunciator will illuminate with either "MAIN DISCH" or "ALT DISCH". The fire t-handle will illuminate bright red when a fire or overheat condition has been detected.

Original Flight Hardware: Fire Detection Loop Test

The Fire Detection Loop Test is a panel that is part of the Lockheed L-1011 fire warning and suppression system. The panel features four annunciators with a "A" and a "B" indicator and four rotary selector switches for either an "A" loop, "B" loop or "BOTH" test for ENG1, ENG2, ENG3 and APU. There are two switches to test the "A" and the "B" loop fire detection system and a "BELL CUTOUT" switch that will silence the fire warning bell in the cockpit.

The panel is located towards the top of the upper Flight Engineer station.

Original Flight Hardware: Fire Extinguisher Test

The Fire Extinguisher Test panel is part of the L-1011 fire warning and suppression system. The panel has indicators for each engine on the L-1011 and the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). There are two fire extinguisher bottles for each of the monitored components. Hence, each annunciator has an indicator for MAIN and ALTN (alternate). There is a breaker on the panel that is labeled with SHORT and a test switch to activate the system test circuitry.

The panel is located in the upper section of the Flight Engineers panel. It is co-located with all the other fire warning and suppression test panels.

Original Flight Hardware: Wheel Well Fire Test

The Wheel Well Fire Test panel is part of the L-1011 fire warning and suppression system. The system has a switch for the "A" or "B" loop operation of the fire test system, as well as two push buttons to activate the "A" and "B" side tests. The annunciator on the panel gives a visual indication of the "A" or "B" side fire alert loop activation.

The panel can be found in the top section of the Flight Engineers Panel. It is part of a larger group of fire test panels in the L-1011 cockpit.

Original Flight Hardware: Engine Turb Cooling Air

The Engine Turb Cooling Air panel is part of the L-1011 fire warning system. The panel has OVHT indicators for Engine 1,2 and 3 and has two test switches for the fire warning loops "A" and "B". The panel would be used to test the "A" and the "B" loop for the Engine Turbo Cooling Air fire warning system.

The panel is located on the Upper Flight Engineer Panel at the very top. The very top of that panel basically has a collection of all the fire warning test systems.
