L-1011 Cockpit Trainer Setup

The image above shows the original design configuration of the L-1011 Cockpit Trainer. This is the trainer that we are in the process of setting up the National Museum of Commercial Aviation. Anybody who ever flew a L-1011 as cockpit crew would have most likely spent a good amount of time in one of these trainers. I will, of course, document the steps of the installation and the retrofit of the trainer for X-Plane. The image above also shows an instructor station and an electronics cabinet. Both the instruction station and the electronics cabinet will be replaced by much more modern devices. The electronics cabinet will exist, however, it will be located outside the sim room. A laptop will replace the instruction station.

The device, which was donated by Delta Airlines, was built by The Singer Company, Link-Miles International Simulation Corporation and was commissioned in 1988. It's quite a neat unit and I am very excited to see it working at the museum. To make the trainer more interesting, we will place screens in-front of the trainer to be able to render outside scenery.

The trainer has the same dimension as the actual L-1011 cockpit and all of the instruments have the same look and feel as the once installed on a production L-1011. The trainee station configuration is an "open-environemnt" structure designed to be spatially correct for the L-1011 aircraft but without any exterior cockpit shell.
