L-1011 Trainer Installation: Integral Instrument Lighting - F/O Side

The buildout of the instrument integral lighting continues on the First Officer side. We only have a few instruments left and we will have then 400Hz power as well as dimmer controlled lighting going to all of the instruments in the L-1011 simulator. We are doing the lighting build-out in parallel with the digital build-out of the simulator.

All of the instrumentation is now installed in the L-1011 Trainer at the National Museum of Commercial Aviation. Once the cockpit lighting is finished, we will start powering the instrumentation up step by step and connect it to the simulator platform.

L-1011 - CPT Installation at the Museum - First Officer's Flood Light

L-1011 Trainer - F/O Flood Lighting

The L-1011 flood light build out continues here at the National Museum of Commercial Aviation in Atlanta. Today we continued with the LED installation into the first flood light fixture above the main instrument panel. Below you can see an image of the original flood light fixture (outlined in orange) retrofitted with the Cool White LEDs.

The flood light is built in such a way that it only illuminates the First Officer's instrument panel and does not spill over to the Pilot's instrument panel and/or the center Instrument panel. The former two are controlled by the Pilot's flood light controller and will be installed later. The image below shows how well the light is contained to the F/O station only.

At the normal viewing position from the first officer's seat there is also no direct light coming towards the F/O. This way the flood lights will not blind the F/O. This is done by a number of "L" shaped louvers in front of each row of lines.

Original Flight Hardware: Main Instrument Panel (MIP) - First Officer Side

Here is the current status of the right hand side main instrument panel. It is pretty much complete, except for one instrument missing (a small cabin altitude indicator) and the HSI control panel below it. The Control surface instrument will eventually be replaced with on that is original to the L-1011 (since the one in the picture is from a DC-10). But here are the instruments that I picked for the project (from top left to right):

  • AFC Modes (as flown on the L-1011)
  • AFC Warning (as flown on the L-1011)
  • Instrument Comparator (as flown on the L-1011)
  • Static Air Temperature - SAT (as flown on the L-1011)
  • True Air Speed - TAS (as flown on the L-1011)
  • Surface Position Indicator (as flown on the McDonald-Douglas DC-10)
  • Airspeed Indicator (as flown on the L-1011)
  • Attitude Direction Indicator ADI (as flown on the Airbus A300)
  • Radar Altimeter Tape (as flown on a Boeing 747)
  • Altimeter (as flown on the L-1011)
  • Radio Digital Distance Magnetic Indicator (RDDMI) (originally flown on a Boeing 747)
  • Horizontal Situation Indicator HSI (as flown on the Airbus A300)
  • Vertical Speed Indicator VSI (as flown on the McDonald-Douglas DC-10)
  • Chronograph (as flown on the L-1011)
  • Instrument Source Select (as flown on the L-1011)
Again, it is a bit of a mix, but, potentially all these instruments could have flown on the Lockheed L-1011 given a specific customer configuration.

Original Flight Hardware: Oxygen Regulator Deman

Crew oxygen on the Lockheed L-1011 is provided form an central source and controlled by a diluter demand regulator mounted at each crew position. Actually, there are a total of 5 oxygen masks in the Lockheed L-1011 cockpit; 3 for the crew and two for the observer seats.

The Oxygen Regulator has the following components:

FLOW ... an window that indicates the flow of oxygen.
REGULATOR OXYGEN PRESSURE ... The line pressure of the oxygen supply.
SUPPLY ... opens the valve from the supply line to the oxygen regulator.
100% OXYGEN and NORMAL OXYGEN ... switches the dilution of the oxygen supply from pure to mixed.
EMERGENCY, NORMAL and TEST MASK ... Sets the oxygen regulator mode.

Panel Location

The 3 panels for the crew are obstructed by the two forward facing crew seats an by the work desk below the flight engineer panel.
