Field Trip: B727 Avionics Bay

This is clearly not a L-1011 project related blog posting, however, the Boeing 727 happens to be the other tri-jet that I like very much. Actually, both the L-1011 and B727 are somewhat my all time favorites. We have a FedEx B727 (N113FE) that belongs to the National Museum of Commercial Aviation that is currently sitting in storage here in Atlanta. The avionics bay is, besides the cockpit, my favorite hangout in the B727. So, for today, here are a few pictures of the B727 avionics bay:

The image above is a wide angle view of the avionics bay. The hatch to enter the bay is on the bottom of the image. You can see two racks of equipment. There is a power distribution center in this bay as well which is behind the rack on the left. The green bottles on the other side of the fuselage are for crew oxygen.

Just as on the B737 or the DC-9 the avionics bay is rather small. The image below should give you a good idea of how crammed the space is:
