Below is an image with my test setup using my iPad to monitor the ARINC 429 traffic coming from the Gables head. (Note: There is no direct connection between the instrument and my iPad ... the data is captured on a Linux system and the iPad just shows me the numbers via a network connection ... however, it would be really neat to have an iPad app to do ARINC 429 stream debug with).
This blog documents a project to build a functional Lockheed L-1011 cockpit replica using real flight hardware, NI labVIEW and the x-Plane software platform.

That is a really nice compact unit. if only it had Nav and ADF in it then it would be perfect.
ReplyDeleteGood point Jack, however, NAV and ADF would probably be driven out of the FMS on an aircraft using this system or by another set of heads. But yes, if it would combine COM and NAV into a single head it would be even better.
ReplyDeleteYeah, don't mind me. I just have seen so many different types of radios lately. It really is amazing how many different variations of the same radio can be produced.
ReplyDeleteIs there actually a name for this type? and are their common manufacturers?
They all seem to have the same standard width and height too. should be close to 15 cm width right?
Oh, lol, guess i should have read the post two down from this one. So Gables makes this unit. That is so cool. So would that be where all the airliners get their coms from?
ReplyDeleteNo problem Jack. Hey, if you would like to have the dimensions of the unit I would be happy to get that for you. Gables is a really cool company and yes, they make a number of really nice devices that are used in both commercial as well as general aviation. You should check out their web site http://www.gableseng.com/home.asp
ReplyDeleteCurd, Just a note. More Info like your Avionics Bending series, the video is cool but unneeded.
ReplyDeleteBTW what 429 card are you using in your Linux Box?
Regards As Always
Cris H.
Thanks Curd,
ReplyDeleteI did take a look through Gables store. nothing i can really use though. They really don't show off their products to well.
I would like dimensions, BUT, the unit you have there is not the same as I will be modeling for my 727.
You wouldn't happen to have any info on one of those flat attitude indicators would you? Will most likely start modeling the one for the 727 in a few days.
The unit looks similar to the one in this image.

I really liked when you showed us the working of the ball type attitude indicator. I will admit i was really amazed to see how it worked from the other end.
Chris, I use a DDC DD-42916i3-300 card. Jack, I don't personally have one of those ADIs, I had bought two units like them form a guy in the UK, unfortunately he turned out to be unreliable took the money and never actually sent them to me.
