Original Flight Hardware: Brake Temperature Monitor

The main landing gear on the Lockheed L-1011 consists of a right and a left landing gear with four wheels on each gear. The entire L-1011 is supported by a total of 10 wheels. The brake temperature monitor provides the cockpit crew with a read-out of brake temperature for the following break systems:

  • LEFT GEAR Forward Wheel 1 and 2 (1F/2F)
  • LEFT GEAR Rear Wheel 1 and 2 (1R/2R)
  • RIGHT GEAR Forward Wheel 3 and 4 (3F/4F)
  • RIGHT GEAR Read Wheel 3 and 4 (3R/4R)

The temperature of the selected brake assembly will be shown on the vertical instrument on the left hand side of the Break Temperature Monitor. There is a CAUTION range and a WARNING range (orange and red) on the temperature gauge.

When the temperature of the brake assembly reaches into the orange zone, the HIGH TEMP annunciator will illuminate. If the temperature reaches into the red band, the OVER HEAT annunciator will illuminate. The two annunciators are independent of the selected brake assembly.

You might have realized that the temperature ranges on the vertical instrument in the pictures are very high, this is because the vertical instrument is actually not from a L-1011 but is an Engine Nacelle Temperature gauge from a B747 (i am still looking for an authentic L-1011 one (2/1/2010)).
